代筆屋ワールドワード (free novelgame.jp original, 2024, one episode, no official English title): its lineage, descendants, and standing in Japan
01What this origin is
The free original this grew from: 代筆屋ワールドワード, released free in 2024 on the Japanese free-game site novelgame.jp as a single-episode version, made by the two-person doujin circle 秘密結社マテンロウ計画 (Himitsu Kessha Matenrou Keikaku). It already carries the premise this lineage grows from: a ghostwriter who takes a client's letter request, gathers matching words and objects by exploring town, and watches the letter's crucial ending get decided by a spin of a roulette rather than by their own hand. Ghostwriter Workshop on Steam is not a new work borrowing that idea from outside; it is this same free game expanded, built together with solo programmer せきやdn's Studio Dragonet, into a five-episode commercial edition released on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

Ghostwriter Workshop Buried gem
Per Steam's own store text, within the fictional republic of Wilsbury, in its capital of Ede, sits a curious little shop: "we'll use an assortment of expressions to convey your exact thoughts and feelings...from love letters to invitations to duel, apologies to contracts--you name it, we write it!" You take a job there, listen to what one of eleven quirky townsfolk needs written, then head out to explore the town and gather words and objects that fit the request. Per Steam's own listing, the twist is that you do not fully control the result: "all the player can do while writing is deciding the concluding lines...via roulette," and because the game also has you memorizing plenty of expressions that do not actually belong, that spin routinely turns a heartfelt love letter into an insult and an apology into a fresh uproar. Built across five episodes each playable in fifteen to thirty minutes, with 14 Steam Achievements, full controller support, and Steam Cloud saves, it grew out of a free, single-episode version, credited on Steam itself as Episode 1, that started life in 2024 on the Japanese free-game site novelgame.jp as an entry in the "TyranoFes 2024" jam. Steam's own developer credit lists 秘密結社マテンロウ計画 (Himitsu Kessha Matenrou Keikaku), a two-person doujin circle whose leader is credited on novelgame.jp as "うた," together with Studio Dragonet, the solo studio of freelance programmer せきやdn, an extremely small team by any count. Published by Waku Waku Games, a Tokyo (Nishi-Gotanda)-based micro-indie label under Chorus Worldwide, an independent publisher itself with no tie to a major holding company or listed game giant, it released November 26, 2025 at ¥1,500 and is Very Positive at 95 percent over 139 reviews (132 positive, 7 negative per Steam's own review API). A paid title, not free, fully launched and not in Early Access, with no AI-generated assets and, per Steam's own content descriptors, nothing on file at all (ids: none, notes: none). It supports Japanese with full voice acting, plus Simplified and Traditional Chinese, but no English at all, and of its 139 reviews, only 2, about 1.4 percent, are in English (both positive). The Japanese outlet Automaton covered it twice, once when the free version launched in August 2024 and again at the commercial release in November 2025, but both pieces ran only on its Japanese-language site; no coverage on the English-language AUTOMATON WEST could be found.
