Higurashi When They Cry is a sound novel created by the Japanese doujin circle 07th Expansion, written by Ryukishi07, with its first arc released at Comiket in 2002. Set in a small rural village, it unfolds as a looping tragedy in which the same days replay and small choices and missteps spiral toward gruesome violence before later answer arcs reveal the truth and a path to salvation; built and sold as an amateur work, it is the landmark origin of the Japanese amateur horror sound novel and its branching, choice-driven dread.

A romance-and-horror sound novel: a choice-driven ADV by the Japanese solo novel-game creator Nike. You transfer to a new school, wander into an abandoned schoolhouse, and find three girl ghosts who cannot pass on. You spend time with each of them, learn the regret that ties her to this place, and try to guide her toward being saved, which here means a parting. It is multi-ending: choose wrong and that heroine's spectral corruption advances, branching toward a harsh, grim bad end instead. Every character but the protagonist is fully voiced. Positive in Japan at 33 reviews and 97 percent, yet the West has not reached it at all: zero English reviews out of 33. There is no English version, the store supports Japanese only, so the language itself is the wall.
