The root of a lineage

Crayon Physics Deluxe: its lineage, descendants, and standing in Japan

01What this origin is

Crayon Physics Deluxe is a physics-based puzzle game created by the Finnish independent designer Petri Purho and released in 2009. The player draws shapes with a crayon on a 2D canvas, and everything drawn instantly becomes a solid object that obeys gravity and physics, so guiding a ball to a star means sketching ramps, levers, pendulums, and weights and letting the simulation carry them out. Winner of the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the Independent Games Festival, it crystallized and popularized the draw-a-shape-and-let-physics-solve-it puzzle and is a defining origin of the hand-drawn physics puzzle lineage.

Q2 HUMANITY Buried gem

A physics-puzzle game by liica, Inc. (Kabushiki-gaisha Riica), a small commercial studio based in Chiyoda, Tokyo, founded in 2011, both the developer and the publisher of the work; the Q series is game-designed and produced by Yusuke Kurita, the creator of the KY (Kuuki Yomi) games. It is the sequel to Q, released in 2015. You solve each stage by drawing: the lines and shapes you draw are made of little human figures, and the instant you finish a stroke it drops under gravity and behaves as real physics, tumbling, rolling, wedging against a wall, and settling into a pile, so a puzzle is solved not by placing an answer but by drawing a shape and trusting the fall to carry it where the goal needs it. On top of that drawing core sit hands-on verbs, your humans can jump, grab, throw, and punch, and eighteen different human characters each bring a special ability, from an enhanced slow-motion and a double jump to detonating a bomb or bending gravity itself, across more than three hundred stages. It plays solo or with up to four players in co-op or competition, over online play and Remote Play Together. Released on Steam in December 2024, after the Switch version in August 2024, it is Very Positive at 90 percent over 62 reviews, a paid title, not free, fully launched and not in Early Access, with no AI-generated assets and, by Steam's own content descriptors, nothing sexual. It supports English alongside Japanese, yet with only 12 of its 62 reviews in English (about 19.4 percent) and roughly four in five of them in Japanese, the West has barely found it. Both a Tokyo studio's work and a Japan-first release, on Switch in August 2024 and Steam that December, it is a sixty-two-review hidden gem the West has not reached. This is a registered commercial studio, not an anonymous doujin.
